Rules & mandatory gear

Rule #1: don't be an ass.

Read on for the rest.

Mandatory equipment

Race officials may inspect equipment at any time. Runners and pacers must carry required equipment during their applicable portion of the event.

Required throughout the race

Required before departing Uhlhorn 2 (mile 51)

You may obtain these at Uhlhorn 2 rather than carry them from the start. All nighttime equipment must remain with you from Uhlhorn 2 through the finish. Pacers joining at Uhlhorn 2 carry their own.

      Strongly recommended

Water: at least 1.5 liters of capacity at all times, with a hydration system capable of holding up to 4 liters. You are not required to carry 4 liters at all times. Filtration: a filter bottle, filtration flask, or equivalent is required for runners and pacers; the canyons have water, use it.

Participants must follow the official course, including all marked turns and out-and-back sections, and carry GPS navigation equipment with the current race route downloaded and sufficient battery power. Course cutting or intentional deviation results in disqualification. Runners who inadvertently leave the route must return to their departure point. Course markings supplement, but do not replace, personal navigation responsibility.

        Aid stations and checkpoints

Approximate aid station sequence: West Peak (mile 12), Halfmoon (23), Uhlhorn 1 (30), Lost Peak (44.5), Uhlhorn 2 (51), Halfmoon 2 (59), Timber Creek (73), West Peak 2 (81.25), Crystal Lake (88), Cascades (96), and Finish (approximately 100). Runners must check in as directed and comply with aid station captain instructions. Access, services, and mileage are subject to final race publications. Full aid station details →

        Time limits, cutoffs, and withdrawal

The overall time limit is 36 hours. The race starts Saturday, August 28, 2027 at 7:00 AM MDT; the finish cutoff is Sunday, August 29, 2027 at 7:00 PM MDT. All listed aid station cutoffs beginning at Uhlhorn 1 are departure cutoffs, not arrival cutoffs. Leaving after a departure cutoff is prohibited unless race officials expressly authorize an exception. A runner missing a cutoff is recorded as DNF unless an exception is authorized. Cutoff table →

A withdrawing runner must notify an aid station captain or race official and receive acknowledgment, surrender the issued GPS tracker and any other returnable race equipment, and may not reenter. At remote aid stations, physically capable runners must be prepared to hike to a designated extraction point. Race officials determine the safest extraction method; transportation is not guaranteed.

        Environmental responsibility

Follow Leave No Trace principles. Where permitted by land managers, bury human waste 6–8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, trails, campsites, and aid stations. Pack out all toilet paper, hygiene products, and litter. Do not damage natural resources. Bear spray is strongly recommended but not mandatory.

        Pacers, crew, and outside assistance

Pacers may join only at designated locations beginning at Uhlhorn 2 (approximately mile 51) and must comply with waivers, navigation, mandatory equipment, safety instructions, and official handoff procedures. Pacer exchanges are permitted only at designated crew-accessible aid stations. Cascades permits pacer drop-off only. Each pacer must individually sign the event waiver.

Runners may receive crew assistance only at designated crew-accessible aid stations. Outside assistance elsewhere is prohibited and may result in disqualification. West Peak, Halfmoon, Lost Peak, and Cascades are not crew-accessible. Crew entry into any restricted aid station results in immediate disqualification of the associated runner, whether or not assistance was provided. Each runner is responsible for the actions and conduct of their crew. Full crew and pacer rules →

        Medical care and emergency assistance

Authorized medical personnel may evaluate and treat runners without penalty, including wound care, bandaging, blister care, and foot care. A runner may continue when medically permitted, within cutoffs, and in compliance with medical instructions. Medical personnel may impose a mandatory hold or medically withdraw a runner. A runner who disregards a mandatory withdrawal or departs contrary to a medical hold may be disqualified. Medical holds do not automatically extend cutoffs.

A runner encountering someone injured, ill, or in distress should stop when safe, assess their condition, offer reasonable assistance or available supplies, record the person's bib number, location, and condition, and report promptly to the next aid station. In serious emergencies, seek help immediately by any available means. Race officials may adjust cutoffs for verified assistance to an injured runner.

        Runner conduct and landowner respect

Rule Number One: Don't Be an Ass. Harassment, threats, or abuse toward race personnel, volunteers, landowners, or participants will result in disqualification and removal from the event.

Runners, pacers, and crews must respect private property boundaries, livestock, fences, gates, and ranch operations. Do not disturb livestock or damage property. Leave gates as found. Access to private land is granted only for authorized race activities and does not permit future recreational access. Unauthorized entry, including scouting or training without landowner permission, may result in disqualification of the associated runner and exclusion from future events.

Race safety, interruptions, and official instructions

The Race Director may modify, delay, suspend, shorten, or cancel the event for safety reasons, including lightning, severe weather, wildfire, hazardous air quality, land closures, or other emergencies. When racing is suspended for safety, the Race Director may adjust cutoffs and finishing deadlines for affected participants based on verified hold duration. Official instructions issued during the event supersede prior guidance. Participants must comply with lawful directions from land managers, emergency responders, and race officials.

        Registration, cancellation, and refunds

Waitlist-based refund policy. Race entries are nonrefundable except when a withdrawing runner's position is filled by an eligible runner from the official waitlist who completes registration and pays the applicable fee. Only after that replacement registration and payment are confirmed will organizers issue a refund of the withdrawing runner's original entry fee, excluding nonrefundable processing fees. Withdrawal alone does not guarantee a refund. Private bib transfers and unauthorized substitutions are prohibited.

Optional registration protection. Any refund protection purchased through UltraSignup or its provider is separate from the race's refund policy and governed by the provider's terms.

Event cancellation protection. The race intends to use UltraSignup's Event Cancellation Protection Program for qualifying cancellations or postponements. Coverage, eligibility, exclusions, timing, and payments are governed by that program's terms and require confirmed enrollment.
